Real time PCR delivered to CAMBio

Dr. Ivan Bendezu, postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Applied Marine Biotechnology at Letterkenny Institute of Technology took receipt of a BioRad I-cycler from Alpha Technologies in March 2004. This real time PCR model was selected because of its capability for multiplexing with up to four fluorochromes. The equipment will be used in a project on the development of modern techniques for the identification of bivalve larvae of commercial interest to the aquaculture and fishing industry. To date the project, funded by the Higher Education Authority, has resulted in the design and testing of molecular probes for mussels and scallop species and their comparison against morphological techniques for larval identification.
