Title

Resource and risk assessment of mussel seed in the Irish Sea.

Objectives

Production of bottom cultured mussels in Ireland has expanded rapidly since 2000, landings reaching almost 30,000 tonnes valued at over €21,000,000 in 2003. Continued expansion is restricted by the availability of mussel seed, most of which is transferred from locations in the Irish Sea. This project aims to understand the biology and ecology of mussel seed beds in the Irish Sea in order to assess the abundance and sustainability of the existing mussel resource. The principle role of LYIT involves the provision of materials and training in the morphological identification of mussel larvae and spat.
