Title

Modified atmosphere packaging for cold-chain transport of fresh mussel at short and long distance.

Objectives

This project will examine the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and cold-chain transport adaptations on the shelf life of fresh Galicia (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and Irish (Mytilus edulis) mussels. The purpose of this work is to define those environmental conditions, which maximize the conservation of seafood from the point of culture to the point of marketing.

The project will examine a novel approach to packaging and preservation that has never been applied to fresh mussels either in Galicia, Ireland or Norway (Trondelag) where considerable interest in these species also exists.

mussels

The technique will enable mussel producers to market product in a more attractive and stable format, enabling mussel producers to enlarge markets at both national and international levels.
