Marine Food Processing and Waste Remediation

Demand for quality marine food is expanding worldwide. The marine food-processing sector was valued nationally at €702 million in 2005. Fish and shellfish processing companies provide significant employment in County Donegal. This section of the Marine Biotechnology Centre is focussed on novel food technologies, marine food flavourings, marine oils and other by products.

Nationally the marine food processing industry produced 63,786 tonnes of fishery waste by-products, 45% of which was in the northwest region. This section of the Centre is also focussed on extracting-value from the waste products of the industry by research into areas such as the development of fish offal fertilisers, chitin use, enzyme extraction from waste, fish ensiling etc.
